Do and do not
We’re living in an age of constant balance between do and do not.
Do wear a mask.
Do conduct meetings virtually.
Do stay updated on the current CDC guidelines.
Do not go into a store without a mask.
Do not meet together in groups larger than X.
Do not go against what the media is telling you.
But what happens when all those “Dos” and “Do nots” run into each other.
As a believer of Jesus Christ, I’ve been told to gather with the church. I believe there are practical as well as spiritual reasons for this command. We’re already seeing the unfortunate consequences of isolation. But now, we’ve been told, regardless of health, common sense, or spiritual conviction, gathering in such a way is prohibited.
We know two lefts make a right. So do two “Do nots” make a do? What happens when what you believe you should do takes a hard right into what you do not do?
I was struck by a thought yesterday. We’re picking and choosing what “dos” and “do nots” we follow. But what about this “do not”…
“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another — and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”
– Hebrews 10:24-25
