It’s just a job
That statement makes my skin crawl.
But is it ever really just a job? Can something that demands at least half of your waking hours each week be “just a job?” You may not particularly enjoy your vocation. But I challenge the idea it’s just a job.
If you find yourself in this boat I challenge you to make one of two decisions:
Either commit to becoming the best at what you do or choose to move on from it.
If you choose to remain in your current position then strive for greatness. Strive to be better than you were yesterday. Strive to be better than the person next to you. An existence without motivation is either the symptom of depression or overwhelm. If that’s the case, you need to make the other decision.
If you don’t desire to be the best insurance adjuster, grocery clerk, wedding planner, or whatever vocation you’re in, then today, right now commit to moving on. I’m not telling you to hand in your two week’s notice immediately. But put a plan in place to find something you’re passionate about. So that one day in the future when you’re at a cocktail party and someone asks what you do you’re able to respond with pride.
Does everyone have the luxury of getting paid for what they enjoy doing? No. But does everyone have the ability to? Yes. You may just have to dig a little deeper and become a bit uncomfortable for a time.
